Market - Saree Washroom
8th cross is a shopping street in Malleshwaram where you can find everything from authentic traditional clothing to junk jewelery. The street is mainly known for it’s silk saree shops. Hence, the first washroom is the saree washroom. A saree is a traditional garment that has been a part of Indian heritage for centuries. The saree - be it cotton or silk - is not just a piece of cloth; it is an expression of a woman's identity, grace, and elegance. The form of the washroom is an abstract replication of the act of wearing a saree, a circle wrap with the cloth going over your shoulder. Street vendors are an essential part of this market street, the entrance of the facade is a metal mesh, allowing them to set up their shops on the facade, which will incentivize them to help maintain the washroom. The roof of the washroom is composed of silk sarees patterns printed on tarpaulin cloth to make it weather-resistant. The roof and the facade are porous - it plays with light and provides better ventilation, yet is solid in spaces of privacy.

In both of the washrooms I use Vastu - Indian guidebook of energy flow to design the interior spaces of the toilet.

Please Note: The washroom designed here only looks at Designing with empathy in two domains Aesthetics and Functionality as the starting step for public washroom design in India. There are other domains yet to be tapped into when designing the washroom.
